Split

I have contacted many studios asking if they offer placement this Easter. One studio that did get back to me was Split a small agency based in Leeds, specialising in creative graphic design for print and web.

I sent split an email asking if they could offer me placement along with examples of my work on Tumblr and Behance. I really liked their work they are creating and would love an insight into the graphic design working world.

Oli Bentley the creative director of Split got back to me. I sent him examples of my work on tumblr and he said he really liked my style 'you clearly have your own thing going on and that's great to see'. He asked me if I could meet him in the studio for a chat about what I could be doing on placement as he didn't want me to be making cups of tea.

I went the the studio for a chat and talked through my Behance and tumblr, Oli gave me some positive feedback on my work. He explained to me how busy he was at the moment and all of the briefs he is currently working on. He asked me which one I would like to work on and what skills I would like to learn/ improve on. Looking at my work he said that I can clearly make things look good as asked me if I knew much about web and the limitations. Web is something that I would really like to improve on as I don't know much about it. After chatting some more he decided that he would like me to see the 'boring' bits of graphic design and learn about the limitations. One thing that Oli said that was lacking in my portfolio was any editorial work. I had published any editorial work or any examples of type setting so he asked me to send him examples of those and see where we can go from there.

I decided to send Oli some editorial/ type setting work from last year my COP practical piece about American Apparel and there controversial advertising.

I went off to Amsterdam for a few days and came back waiting for a reply from Oli. He got back to me and explained that the timing was completely wrong and that he had a photo shoot schedule change quite a lot for the prospectus. He apologised for the short notice and explained that it was not a reflection of my work.

I completely understood how busy Oli was and explained to him that I would be busy until the end of May when we break up for uni, he told me to contact him again in May and he could see what he could do.

The chat at split was valuable experience and I will be contacting Oli again at the end of second year this May asking if then is a better time for placement.
