Cheese Society- Dairy Disco

The Dairy Disco was held at the Bilbao Bar in Granary Whalf, I was pretty happy with the turn out considering we didn't promote it around uni because we ran out of time we only promoted it online via Facebook. This event seemed very last minute but I have high hopes for the Cheese Ball the last cheese event that myself and the president will organise.

Cheese Society- Dairy Disco

For the Dairy Disco poster I wanted to collaborate with the illustration students that are going to take over the Cheese Society next year. I asked them to try and draw a DJing cow as a joke but they actually did it and I loved it. I added in the type in the same position of every other Cheese poster and added some hand drawn type which I scanned in and manipulated on illustrator.

Vital- Fashion Branding- live brief- Reflection

I have been working with Sian Sweet a fashion designer from Staffordshire university on her new brand Vital Apparel selling women street wear. She asked me to brand her new business, after many messages and meetings the final outcomes are above. She was more than happy with the designs and gave me £100 instead of the amount on the invoice.

Leeds Print Festival- Print Talks

The Leeds Print Festival Talks were interesting, talks from Ian Anderson, Danny Leigh and Alan Kitching. Alan Kitching was my favorite speaker, fascinatingly talking about letterpress and the thinking behind his designs.

Leeds Print Festival- Equip Print Workshop

I was approached by Equip to assist them with their print workshop as part of Leeds Print Festival. The workshop was a huge success and people went away having learnt a new printing method and being proud of their prints. It was a fab and successful day helping Equip out and teaching people how to screen print.

Leeds Print Festival- GF Smith Archive

As part of Leeds Print Festival there will be a GF Smith Colourplan archive displaying the Colourplan papers and traditional print methods. I decided to screen print with three colours as I had only previously experimented with two colour separation. Originally I was given citre so I decided to design a hotdog and the paper would be the mustard of the hotdog. I wasn't going to be in Leeds when the paper was getting delivered so I was given cool grey instead which I was pretty happy about as it made the colour decisions easier. The prints were for sale for the week in Colours May Vary along with the whole exhibition.

Leeds Print Festival- Printgram

I was lucky enough to get the oportunity to exhibit my work at this years Leeds Print Festival, this was a fantastic oportunity to display my printed publication featuring various print techniques including letterpress, foiling and screen print.

Emails to Fluid

Placement- Fluid- Overall

I chose to email Fluid in Birmingham for work experience as I wanted to know what it would be like to work for a larger company compared to Risotto which was just working for one person. In Easter I worked there for just over a week. Fluids studio is split up in two halves a web side and a design side with about 6/7 designers on each side. I was on the design side working alongside a designer there called Steve and reporting back to James the director. I wouldn't say the environment of the studio was very creative, people didn't really speak to each other, it was always silent and designers constantly getting angry and stressed out at their computers which didn't make a very nice working atmosphere.

Fluid have big contracts with big brands, while I was there designers were working on briefs with Little Mix, PSP, Studio Cannal, Mafia 3, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and a couple more. With these big brands come a lot of brand guidelines to look through, I wasn't working with any brand guidelines personally but many other designers were and having to stick to all the restrictions, this is something I would have to get used to in the future.

Although I didn't enjoy my experience that much it has thought me a lot and I'm glad I did it because it has made me realise what it is like to work with big brands.

Lessons I have learnt from being at Fluid

- designers always want to have more time on a project then they actually have

- getting feedback at various points of designing is always useful

don't be embarrassed to ask for help, it's not a sign of weakness

- read briefs fully

- always need to research no matter how small the brief is, to think of fresh ideas

- the demand for design can be intense resulting in high stress levels

- sitting in front of a computer screen from 10-6 is actually quite difficult and takes some getting used to

Overall, this experience has left me quite confused about life after college, I much preferred working for Risotto and being more hands on. Nobody in Fluid seemed that exited or happy to be working on such big briefs, I think I have realised that I would like to go into print after college or work for a smaller design studio.
