Taking Care of Business- Presentation

Here is the presentation, it took quite a while to sort out and organise so I am happy we started it sooner rather than later. It includes all we have found out about screen printing, our manifesto, about the business and what we have to offer and all the costs we would have to take into consideration when creating a screen printing business.

Here are my notes for the presentation:

Who we are

We are the print cellar. A screen printing company which aims to promote a more hands on printing methods and creativity.

The business will be split up into three main areas:
-workshops / for the general public
-education / for students and schools to learn a new printing technique
-design / for people wanting unique design

Meet the team

We have a team of 5 of us we wont all be working full time because of costs, two of us would work full time and three of us would work part time however we will all have equal involvement in the decisions of the business.

I am the marketing representative and designer, in charge of dealing with the customers and clients helping with their needs, also selling products on behalf of the company.

Taking Care of Business- Designs

Final Logo

After many group design decisions being made here is the final logo, I think it represents the company well as traditional print company with a modern twist.

Photos

Here are some landscape photo's that Katie has taken to help with the designs of the website, posters and presentation

Posters

Above is a poster that Molly created a poster that focuses on the social media aspects of the business, it doesn't need much information on this poster as the audience would look into the social media websites to see what we are about.

Above is a poster that Helen and I worked on, a poster that explains a little bit more about the business. It took us a while to work out how to lay the poster out as we were unsure how we wanted it to look. We decided to use photography so the audience knows what we are about immediately.

Postcards

Here are a couple of postcards made that Helen made with some brush paint textures, if we had more time we would of liked to screen print these.

Website

Some website moc ups that Katie made, I added them to a mac screen to give them a bit more context. As you hover over the links it would turn to the teal blue where to click. The front image would slowly change to more print related images. As you scroll down the website would explain more areas of the business, the three main areas.

Manifesto

Here is the manifesto design with the 9 main points to the business

Business Cards

If we had more time on this project we would of liked to have taken the time to screen print some business cards and the manifesto, but as we ran out of time I have just done a quick moc up of how I would like them to look. I would of possibly added a blue paint stroke across them and screen printed the black logo on top.

Taking Care of Business- Manifesto

In this technology era we think it is important to value and practice the traditional methods as well as the digital ones. Here at print cellar we work closely with our clients creating work that both the clients and their audience will love. We take time over projects so that our principle of quality over quantity shines through.

We believe collaboration is essential to create unique and essential design.

We strive to create personal design

We design everything to the highest standard

We form a happy relationship with our clients

We are a community

We believe everyone should have the facilities available to be creative

We strive in teaching our methods

We do not idolise money

We love to print

Taking Care of Business- Costings

Here are the main costs we have already in a spreadsheet, these might change as we go further into the project, we also need to work out wages. For each session we are thinking of having it £10 per person as the materials that they will use will cost £5 a person so we will make 50% profit.

Taking Care of Business- Moving Forward

Now we have all of the costs done we need to move forward and start to think about the design and how we want our business to look. We have decided that we want the logo to be quite traditional.

A tradional logo idea that I thought of

Traditional logo ideas that Vanessa thought of, we all like a few of them and I think they all work well because they are traditional and bold. We are all going to go away and get some digital logos mocked up and hopefully we can decide on a logo between us.

Other things that we need to do:

- design manifesto
- purchase aprons ready to screen print
- screen print all material ready to present
- moc up website
- put the presentation together

Taking care of Business- Net Graph Prices

http://www.natgraph.co.uk/home/

Today our main focus has been on pricing things up, Helen has a spreadsheet with all the prices that we need. Net graph are the company that uni get some off their screen printing equipment off, so I decided to give them a call and enquire about some prices for our business.

Model 3- £9380
Model 4- £11315
Model 5- £14835

They also explained to me that for the exposure systems we would need to

Model 0- £3000 shelf £125
Model 1- £3575 shelf £130
Model 2- £4100 shelf £165
Model 3- £5430 shelf £220

Model 1- £1340
Model 2- £2450

Model 0- £775
Model 1- £935
Model 3- £1380
Model 4- £1805
Model 5- £2805

After gathering the prices from this company we have decided that they are too expensive to buy everything off as we have found others for cheaper, but we are going to get the model 0 wash out booth as this one will be big enough for our biggest screen.

Taking care of business- Logo ideas

Ideas

We have decided that we would like the logo to be type heavy so I have had had a few thoughts of how we could lay out the type and what sort type we could use.

Contemporary

This is the first idea that I experimented with digitally, the building that we have decided to have the print cellar based at is quite unique as it is underneath the railway and in one of the arches. The semi circles on top of the logo represent the unique railway space we have chosen. In this logo the font used is Avenir this makes the logo look quite contemporary.

This is a the same idea again but with a bolder bubblier font.

Above are a few of experiments with the initials of the 'print cellar' 'pc' added to some shapes, again these have quite a contemporary look to them.

Above is 'print cellar' in Braggadocio font, the use of shape in this font makes it have a modern look.

Again here is another experiment in a script curly font, a hand drawn script font would represent the hand done feel to screen printing too.

Traditional

This experiment I used a variety of fonts including 'Dollie Script', 'Intro' and 'Centry gothic' the variety of fonts makes the logo more interesting. I designed this on illustrator using curved paths to make the arches and kurning the 'Leeds' to make it fit the space better. This logo works well and had much more of a traditional feel to it, I have took this further and added texture and colour, I also think this would work well as a stamp.

Taking care of Business- Logo Research

Research

Here is some research that I have carried out on various logos such as railway and canal logos, at this point in time we are unsure whether we should go for a contemporary or a more worn and old fashioned look. For a contemporary look we shall go for a sans serif font and for a more old fashioned look we shall go for a script or serif font.

Canal branding by Olly Sorsby

Above are some logo designs by Olly Sorsby, they have an old fashioned look about them while still looking quite modern. What I do like about them is the grain and texture of them and the earthy natural colours used.

After research and logo meetings I think we are pushed towards the more old fashioned look as it will have more of a concept behind it as screen printing is something old fashioned that is becoming more contemporary.

Taking Care of Bussiness- Primary Research

Today I went down to the print room in college to gain a greater in sight of the costs of things we will need for print cellar and what sort of sizes things are to fit in the actual space. I took some questions with me and got some good answers, I think throughout this project we will need to keep popping back to ask more questions.

-What size are the print beds?

The ones they have in college are 1m x 1.61m (thats just the bed) we need to take in to consideration the metal clap that goes over the print bed and that adds an extra 0.5m onto width of the bed.

-How much does print beds cost?

They didn't know exactly how much they cost but they did give me an estimate of £1500

They said to check out Net Graph for costs

http://www.natgraph.co.uk/screenprinting-equipment/

-How many different types of paint are there?

For just printing on paper they use: system 3 acrylic

They said for industry we may need to consider using oil based paints but college don't as it is much harder to clean

-How much does the paint cost?

The system 3 paint costs £12 a pot

-How much is the exposer?

They have had there exposer for 16-17 years so don't really know exactly how much they would cost now but they gave me an estimate of £5000

They said that sometimes in industry they have a small room just for exposing with lights in so maybe we could consider a small room just for exposing the negatives

-How much are drying racks?

£220

-How much are frames?

They said to check out ebay, A4 would cost approximately £20

They purchase some of their frames and materials from Steve Woods

http://www.steve-wood.co.uk/

-What sort of chemicals are involved?

Bsolve and Bstrip (he didn't know the exact names of the chemicals)

They purchase all their chemicals from buckle berries (can't find anything online)

-Roughly how much would the chemicals cost?

£22 for 25l of stripping chemicals    and     £25 for 5l of solve

-What safety clothing would we need to wear?

Need protection for cleaning the screens including eye, ear and hand protection

Taking Care of Business- Location

We need a space to set up our business, we

Our space will require

-water
-gas
-electric

We don't really have a budget in mind
Location is key, we want somewhere in the centre of leeds somewhere unique

A reasonable off license premises is offered in Headingley in a very popular and densely populated student area, the shop is 25sq metres and is already fitted out with shelving, flooring, air conditioning, 4 upright fridges and 1 upright freezer, and there is ample ground storage for stock.

I liked the look of the outside of this building unfortunately there weren't any pictures of the inside provided and I think you can only rent small offices separately however this would be in the perfect central location.

Again very modern looking. With this one I am unsure about the access to water as this would be a necessity to clean and wash off screens. Good location and very spacious.
