DBA- Logo Research

To start my research I went to the library and looked at logo books, there were a couple of books that had transport logo sections, they were useful to look at. Looking at the type of the logo's was most useful seeing what big companies have gone for.

The main inspiration for my initial logo ideas have come from Typetoken looking at their minimal designs and good use of shape, I want to design something that indicates 'loop' but nothing too obvious.

DBA- Location Research

Here is research on various subjects around Hyperloop.

Los Angles- research into LA as this is where the Hyperloop will stop.

DBA- Transport branding research

Virgin Branding

Virgin Group Ltd. is a British multinational branded venture capital conglomerate founded by entrepreneur Richard Branson and Nik Powell. Its core business areas are travel, entertainment and lifestyle, and it also manages ventures in financial services, transport, healthcare, food and drink, media and telecommunications; together, Virgin's businesses consist of more than 400 companies worldwide.

Virgin Group's date of incorporation is listed as 1989 by Companies House, who class it as a holding company; however Virgin's business and trading activities date to the 1970s. The net worth of Virgin Group was estimated at £5-5.5 billion as of November 2014.

easyJet Branding

The easyGroup is the private investment vehicle of Stelios, the serial entrepreneur. The easyGroup is the owner of the ’easy’ brand and licences it to all of the ’easy’ branded businesses, including easyJet plc, the airline Stelios started in 1995 and in which he remains the largest single shareholder. The easyGroup profits by either selling shares in the businesses or by licensing or franchising the brand to reputable partners. The ’easy’ brand currently operates in more than a dozen industries mainly in travel, leisure, serviced office accommodation and other consumer facing sectors.

London Underground

Transport for London (TFL) strives to provide a safe, efficient and reliable service to its millions of passengers each day. TFL London Travel Information’s key role is to provide an accessible and comprehensive information service to the users of all TFL’s transport modes. It is essential that London Travel Information centres are presented visually, in a strong and consistent way, befitting that of a comprehensive transport network. These fascia rules and specifications have been produced expressly to ensure continuity in the applciation and presentation of London Travel Information’s identity to the public and must be strictly adhered to.

Nasa Branding

NASA's vision: We reach for new heights and reveal the unknown for the benefit of humankind.
To do that, thousands of people have been working around the world -- and off of it -- for more than 50 years, trying to answer some basic questions. What's out there in space? How do we get there? What will we find? What can we learn there, or learn just by trying to get there, that will make life better here on Earth?

DBA- Bus seat patterns

Bus seat patterns are so crazy to hide all of the dust in them, but I do like the vibrant colours and the patterns, this can provide good inspiration for Hyperloop something vibrant and eye catching.

DBA- Hyperloop

Today the DBA came to give us the Hyperloop brief.

The breif is to create an identity for Hyperloop:
Hyperloop is a high speed ground transport system
Travels from LA-San Francisco in 30 mins
Travels at 800mph
Founder Elon Musk
Think about the target audience: the general public
It has been named the 5th mode of transport

2 key components to design:
logo
capsule

Other possible items to design:

Tickets
Uniform
Timetables
Maps
Signature
Posters
Publication
App
Capsule interiors
Station environments

All about the thinking

Research:

How it travels:

Map of route:

“Cross between Concorde, a rail gun and an air hockey table”

The system will be powered by solar panels.

Pod diameter probably around 2m.

As they approach their journey’s end they would be routed out of the air stream and slowed down using a magnetic braking system.

Safer than air travel

They also detailed elements of the systems involved:

• Braking: “The team has designed a mechanically fail-safe braking system, meaning if the actuators or computers fail, the system will brake automatically. The system is single fault tolerant and can decelerate the pod at the 2.4G maximum permitted under SpaceX rules. From top speed, the brakes dissipate 1.5MJ of kinetic energy.”
• Lateral control: “The pod’s lateral control will utilize passive magnets and active electromagnetic damping to maintain lateral stability and keep the pod centered on the rail.”
• Lift suspension: “The lift suspension significantly reduces system vibrations and allows the pod to traverse track variations The system will also retract the pod’s skis to reduce magnetic drag during low speed operation.”
• Levitation: “The pod will utilize a passive magnetic levitation system that incorporates two arrays of 20 neodymium magnets. After liftoff, the pod will maintain a 15mm levitation gap height at cruising speed and a peak lift-to-drag ratio of 14.”
